Winning tip: Art and yurts, Naoshima

Naoshima, the pearl of Japan’s art islands and an easy one-hour study passage from Kyoto or Osaka, has museums arraying from a gallery hotel to art installations. Free bus take you around the art locations and to an amazing art-filled sento bathhouse( PS4. 40 ), terminated with full-size elephant figures overlooking the showers. Standing in the Benesse Foundation’s hotels is very pricey( from PS250) but there is a magnificent alternative a very short walk from the key artwork locates and beautiful: Tsutsuji-so’s yurts( PS25-PS30 per person per darknes ). They are private, traditional Mongolian tents with proper beds.

E-bikes in Takayama

Photograph: Hanah

A tour on e-bikes of the Japanese Alps countryside around Takayama with Daisuke, the guided tour, for precisely PS42 per head, was the foreground of our holiday. We started from JR Hida-Hagiwara station and took in historic villages to start with then a conceal depression off the sightseer line, the e-bikes constituting light work of the hills. There were amazes along the way such as a traditional Japanese lunch( included in the price) and coffee on the river in the middle of nowhere, and all for a reasonable rate. The 26 km/ six-hour route and its positions were incredible.
